Expeditionen
Expedition is a private home located in the scenic town of Henningsvær in the Lofoten archipelago, a working fishing town but also a recreational heaven offering world-class climbing, hiking and wildlife-watching. Due to the building’s heritage listing and therefore limited possibility for new windows, we worked on a layout that focused on opening up the internal space, drawing light deep into the building.
Inspired by the shell of the crab and the blood of the fish, the deep red walls frame the beautifully aged timber structure. Materials such as black concrete, oil-treated steel, pine paneling, linen and wools were chosen to age slowly and beautifully; the interiors are relaxed, natural and social.
The renovation required insulating the building to modern standards, a task that saw us dismantling and numbering the original timber panelling and later returning the peeling paint facade to its former non-glory, retaining its Rorbu charm.
